Wolves top Abia Warriors in Warri

By Damiete Sanipe

Warri Wolves got the better of Abia Warriors with two quick goals in the opening 15 minutes in their MatchDay 31 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) encounter played at the Delta State Polytechnic Mini Stadium, Ozoro on Sunday.

Apparently basking in the euphoria of a difficult draw against Enyimba midweek in Aba after series of poor results, Sunday Williams got the Seasiders in a sparkling form as he fired a bullet of a shot past the goalkeeper after connecting well with Ijeh Daniel’s cross in the box as early as the second minute.

In the reverse fixture, it was same Williams who got an early opener for Wolves but saw his side lose 4-1. To avoid a repeat, Wolves pushed forward and were all over the Warriors until the pressure paid off in the 14th minute.

Goal scorer Williams turned provider as he sent a delightful cross to find Ihezuo Emmanuel at the back post to head in beyond goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo in goal for Abia Warriors to double Wolves advantage.

The two goals must have unsettled the Warriors as they committed errors at back but fortunate to keep the score line and gradually got into the game.

They took control of the game, started creating chances and should have at least scored in the 21st minutes but two brilliant saves from Wolves goalkeeper, Michael Uwueru denied them that pleasure of a fight back.

In the 32nd minute, Obioma Chukwuemeka (Abia) thought he had scored as he watched his attempt in the six yard roll out of play with a little deflection to a corner kick.

The first halve ended 2-0 in favour of the Seasiders.
The second half started just as the first ended with Abia Warriors asking all the questions while Wolves soaked the pressure and waited for opportunities to hit on the counter.

Godwin Obaje powered his way into the box in the 48th minute but could not get the ball beyond goalkeeper Uwueru who rushed out of his line to grab the ball off the foot of Obaje that was under pressure from a defender.

Both Coaches made changes to their team but the score line did not change. Wolves would have added to their tally as the Warriors pushed forward in desperate search of a goal but substitutes Mark Daniel and Eregare Stephen lost good opportunities in the closing moments of the game.

The Seasiders with this victory are still in the relegation fight but will be hoping for a good result in Port Harcourt against Rivers United while Abia Warriors return home to host Kwara United in MatchDay 32.
