Wikki leave it late to see off Lobi

By Andrew Randa

A late goal by Abubakar Umar ensured Wikki Tourists got the three points off visiting Lobi Stars in a Matchday 8 encounter on Monday at the New Jos Stadium.

The cagey affair saw little chances with Wikki creating most of what could be described as half chances before the lively Umar scored the winner for the Bauchi side.

Wikki were looking to consolidate their perfect home record at their adopted home ground at the New Jos Stadium.

The Bauchi side were on the up at the start of the game as Sadiq Adamu tested goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode in the 3rd minute but his effort didn’t yield dividends.
Right back Bala Zakka and Godday Clement both had chances to give Wikki the lead but a combination of goalkeeping and profligacy in front of goal denied them the opener.

Lobi Stars got into the game gradually with Samad Kadiri leading the charge against a resolute Wikki defence led by Peter Ambrose. Kadiri did get a chance in the 17th minute but his foray was cut short by

The first half was dire as there was little created in goalscoring chances with Abubakar Umar’s miss in the 26th minute the only clear-cut chance created.

Wikki started better in the second half and could have taken the lead but Abubakar Umar and Sadiq Adamu both missed chances before Lobi nearly took the lead when Kadiri nearly got to the end of a superb
cross by Solomon Kwambe into the Wikki box.

The game turned on its head when Wikki coach Mbwas Mangut threw on three-goal striker Nafiu Kabuga for the injured Idris Guda. Kabuga it was who skimmed past two defenders to set up Abubakar Umar for the
winner in the 82nd minute.

Lobi did puff a bit but could not get the equaliser as Wikki ran out 1-0 winners.

Wikki Tourists coach Mangut told npfl.ng after the game that his deserved to get the three points off Lobi Stars even though it was a very difficult game.

“We did on our best and I’m happy we got the three points at stake against a very tough opponent. They (Lobi) played well too but we deserved to win the game,” he said.

“The game plan was to take the game to them from the start. We did so but we could not do much as they defended very well. I’m glad we were able to take our chance to score late in the game.

“We haven’t dropped points here since we started playing in Jos. I’m a son of the soil and the land has been good to me and my team. Jos fans have also done their bit to cheer our boys during games and we
appreciate that.”
