Ogunbote waxes lyrical on continental chances after Enyimba win

Remo Stars secured an important 1-0 win over Enyimba on Sunday in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 36 fixture in Ikenne to keep their hopes of finishing the season with a continental ticket (CAF Confederation Cup).

Remo Stars had gone five games without a win against the People’s Elephant in previous NPFL encounters before Sunday’s win. Sikiru Alimi’s second-half goal was enough to seal the win for the Sky Blue side.

A first-half performance dominated by the hosts witnessed Enyimba goalkeeper, Olorunleke Ojo making brilliant saves to keep the score goalless. In the final minute of the first half, Ojo pulled a superb save when he dived to his left side to keep off Remo Stars captain’s 20-yard free-kick.

Remo Stars restarted the second half with Alimi scoring the only goal of the encounter within 30 seconds, it was Alimi’s eighth NPFL goal of the season after joining the side mid-season

Ogunbote told the www.npfl.ng about the importance of the Enyimba win and how the players will make history if they finish with a continental ticket.

“We were the underdogs coming into the season, we were able to sustain the momentum and keep our spot in the top five. The players have been fantastic and we have driven this journey with their commitment. The players are about to make history and be part of the legacy at Remo Stars if we finish with the continental ticket,” said Ogunbote.

Alimi is arguably one of the best transfers in the second round of the NPFL season with eight goals in the league, and an elated Alimi appreciated those that made it possible.

“I want to appreciate my coaches, teammates, and management for helping me to settle down quickly. I am excited to contribute to our success this season and we have to keep our heads down to finish with the task and make the fans happy,” Alimi told Npfl.ng.

Remo Stars will travel to Sunshine Stars on Matchday 37, Ogunbote’s former club and they will host Niger Tornadoes on the final day. Ogunbote says they have to approach the game with different plans.

“We have to approach the game with a different mindset and tactical plans, but we are hopeful. We have gone this far and I believe we can get the job done. We will secure our places in the hall of fame of the club, as the first set of people to take the club to the continent,” Ogunbote added.
