Oghali header earns Go Round consecutive home win

By Fisayo Dairo

Shedrack Oghali’s second half header was all Go Round FC needed to beat Wikki Tourists in a Matchday 21 encounter in Omoku on Sunday.

After a barren first half, the former Warri Wolves striker headed home Adeseun Adelani’s cross in the 54th minute and for the second home game in a row, the hosts held on for an important 1-0 victory.

Sunday’s game decided at the Krisdera Hotel Stadium was the third in the three-match ultimatum given Go Round coach Ngozi Elechi and victory, just like the first against MFM has taken the modest side on to 14th on the table.

Elechi made four changes to his side after a narrow loss at FC Ifeanyiubah last weekend, restoring goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and the experienced Chile Azu in the starting lineup.

Wikki Tourists meanwhile were hit with injuries and withdrawals ahead of Sunday’s game with head coach Bala Nikyu making a whopping eight changes to the side that drew at home to Rangers last weekend.

Shammah Tanze, Victor Alegbe, Christopher Waziri and Abdullahi Musa were among those that could not make the trip allowing Ocheme Edoh and Manu Garba to lead the line upfront.

The hosts almost got a dream start, like in Nnewi last Sunday through the same source, Chidi Nwachukwu. The winger however fired his effort over after Azu intelligently worked a free kick onto his path.

Chances were as scarce as they could get in the opening half and the closest any of the sides could get to opening the scoring was through Nwachukwu again in the 34th minute but this time, he hit his daisy-cutter straight at Wikki Tourists goalkeeper Pius Ibrahim.

Despite having the lion share of possession, the hosts were frustrated by their resolute visitors with Go-Round’s inspirational captain and playmaker Nelson Esor particularly out of sorts.

Second half

Esor was substituted by the coach after four minutes into the second half and they got their breakthrough shortly afterwards.

A long throw chance from Chile Azu looked to have been squandered but winger Adelani picked up the pieces at the far post before crossing into the box for Oghali to head home, leaving Ibrahim with no chance.

The hosts almost doubled their advantage two minutes later with another sumptuous delivery coming from Adelani almost from the same spot but pint-sized substitute Junior Ogar headed over.

While it looked as though the hosts were getting their groove, the visitors almost stunned them just before the hour mark through their topscorer Nafiu Kabuga who darted in from the left before shooting right at the edge of the box. His effort going agonizingly wide.

The Tourists then went even closer 15 minutes from time when Abdulkareem Suleiman created space for himself and crossed at the far post for the lurking Manu Garba who could only head onto the side netting. That was Garba’s last contribution to the game as he was replaced immediately by Elijah Ani.

What was left in the game were tentative long range efforts, the best of which was well saved by Wikki goalkeeper Ibrahim from Morice Chukwu’s effort.

There was however still enough time for goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to pick up his customary booking for time-wasting which will rule him out of their next game – a trip to Akwa United in Uyo.
