Kwara United still in continental race after thrashing relegated MFM in Ilorin
Kwara United on Sunday finished their 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) home matches on a high with a 3-0 thrashing of already relegated MFM FC of Lagos, to keep their continental hopes alive.
Www.npfl.ng reports that the MatchDay 37 fixture was played at the Kwara Stadium Complex, Ilorin, in the presence of the state Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
It was the visitors that started on the front foot with an early scare in the third minute when they surged forward but goalkeeper Abdullateef Ishola came to the rescue to calm frayed nerves.
Not long from then, the hosts seized control of the match and dominated for most parts of each half.
Kabiru Balogun who tormented the visitors’ defense for as much as possible in the match had his corner kick met by the head of Junior Lokosa who powered in to beat Kingdom Osayi for the first goal in the 15th minute.
The first goal only lasted for just three minutes as the hosts doubled their lead when Muritala Lawal sent in a low cross from the left flank towards Issa Gata who struck beautifully to make it 2-0 in the 18th minute.
Kwara United missed a huge goal scoring opportunity in the 32nd minute when Balogun again made a beautiful run down the right and released Issa Gata who would see his weak shot fly pass the front of goal.
Balogun created another cross two minutes later but this time it failed to meet the heads of both Samad Kadiri and Junior Lokosa.
The visitors’ first real goal scoring opportunity came in the 43rd minute when Tunde Azeez effort hit the woodwork.
Not long after the game restarted, MFM reorganised with a triple change when the trio of Micah Ojodomo, Solomon Agbalaka and Mumuni Amoo came off for Nelson Kenedinum, Samson Charles and Nduka David.
Jide Fatokun’s effort was deflected out for a corner in the 63rd minute. The resulting Corner kick from Balogun flew past the head of everyone and went out for a throw-in.
A long range strike from Afeez Nosir hit the wood work in the 76th minute in an attempt by the hosts to increase the tally.
With five minutes left on the clock, Samad Kadiri followed Fatokun’s rebound from a free kick to make it 3-0 for the hosts and sealed a perfect last home game for the CAF Confederation Cup hopeful.
Kwara United now have 58 points from 37 games and placed 4th on the NPFL log.
They will face another relegation threatened Heartland FC of Owerri in Okigwe on Sunday
