A second half brace from Ndifreke Effiong was all it took Abia Warriors to beat MFM FC to have an encouraging start in their first game of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Sunday.
Starting impressively in the opening moments, the Warriors were all over the visitors and got a deserved spot kick as early as the second minute after Bashiru Monsuru upended Ndifreke in the box.
MFM goalkeeper, Folarin Abayomi did brilliantly, diving full length to his right to make the save from Ndifreke who was a bit casual with his spot kick. Folarin made another good save in the 10th minute from a diving header by Obi Samson on the edge of the box to keep his team in the game.
Abia Warriors created more scoring opportunities but were wasteful in front of goal with Ndifreke and Anthony Okemmiri the biggest culprits.
The Olukoya Boys then came into the game midway into the first half and took control of the game, dictating the pace and created half chances but were not close enough as goalkeeper Agbor Ekoi of Abia warriors dealt easily with their attempts at goal.
The first half ended goalless.
The second half started with increased tempo as both teams pushed for something positive in a game that was open and there for the taking. Muhammed Garba should have given the home team the lead two minutes into the second half when a long throw-in was flicked to the far post and the ball fell to an unmarked Garba who missed with the goal at his mercy.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 52nd minute when Ndifreke benefited from a good team move after Obi Samson’s initial shot was blocked and the rebound fell to an unmarked Ndifreke in the box to slot home for the opener.
MFM fought back and almost got the equalizer but a brilliant double save from Ekoi ensured Abia Warriors kept their slender lead.
Ndifreke then doubled the lead 14 minutes later when he rose highest to head home Shedrack Asiegbu’s corner kick to take the game beyond MFM.
Substitute Akuneto Chijioke almost got a consolation for MFM ten minutes from time but could not beat the Abia Warriors goalkeeper after beating the offside trap to come one on one with the goalkeeper.
Abia Warriors next travel to Maidugari to face El-Kanemi in Matchday 2 of the NPFL.
