Esor, Martins on target as Rivers United defeat MFM 2-0
By Promise Etim
Rivers United put up a scintillating performance to beat an uninspiring MFM side 2-0 in front of their fans at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in a Matchday 12 fixture of the Nigeria Professional Football League on Sunday.
Basking on the euphoria of a back to back victory and pumped up for a third win in a roll, United drew first blood in the 26th minute, despite a dull start, when a Chigozie Ihunda’s set piece into the box was headed home by Ossy Martins to give Rivers the lead.
Three minutes into the second half, the Pride of Rivers doubled their lead when a good team move orchestrated by Ossy Martins in the middle, put Nelson Esor through on goal.
The diminutive midfielder found his way into the penalty area and rounded the onrushing MFM goalkeeper Folarin Abayomi to score his first goal for United since making the switch from Go Round FC two seasons ago.
Earlier in the game, both teams could not express themselves, as the only real chance came through Adeniji Adewole, whose effort from edge of the box produced an easy save for goalkeeper Darlington Ovunda of Rivers.
After the opening moments, United took control of the game with Esor stealing the show with his runs, dribbles and passes. Esor managed his way into the visitors box and attempted a clever chip over the goalkeeper, but narrowly missed target in the 17th minute.
A minute later, Ihunda got a clear sight at goal and took a low shot but goalkeeper Abayomi was at the right place to claim the ball.
Stephen Michael Gopey should have opened the scoring for the home side on 22 minutes. Esor had dribbled his way into the box and laid an inch-perfect pass to Gopey, who wasted some time, before being dispossessed of the ball. Ossy Martins solitary goal gave United the advantage as they head into the break.
The second half started on a high note with United’s second goal and MFM fought back bravely but their efforts were not good enough as Rivers United held on to the victory, which helped them to move third place on the log.
United stand a chance to continue their winning streak with another home game against Nasarawa United on Wednesday, while MFM will entertain Dakkada at the Agege Township Stadium.
