Enyimba turn back Akwa United 3-1 in Aba
It was a disappointing return to the Enyimba International Stadium for Mfon Udoh whose solitary goal was not enough to lift Akwa United in their Matchday 3 encounter of the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, .
A 13th minute spot kick by Austin Oladapo and two more goals from Stanley Dimgba and Samson Obi gave Enyimba International FC a first half three goal lead putting the match beyond their visitors Akwa United.
Both team paraded players that have had stints for either side in the past.
Usman Abd’Allah made five changes to the line up that defeated Nasarawa United in a rescheduled fixture on Thursday, bringing in former Akwa United striker, Victor Mbaoma in his attack to partner Stanley Dimgba. He also opted for another former Akwa United player, Cyril Olisema in the midfield alongside Farouk Mohammed and Nelson Ogbonnaya in the defense.
Manager of the Promise Keepers, John Obuh on his side, made only two changes to the side that played a barren draw against Abia Warriors in a rescheduled fixture on Thursday. He brought in Ocheme Edoh and Christian Ekong and retained Dare Ojo who was in the Enyimba midfield two seasons ago.
The match which brought the Enyimba fans to the stadium in their numbers lived up to it’s expectation as it started off with interesting exchanges between Olisema who posted a man of the match performance, Dimgba and Obi for Enyimba and Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Ocheme Edoh and Mfon Udoh for Akwa United.
The Promise Keepers had the first opportunity in the 11th when Udoh’s curled effort from a free kick forced Theophilus Afelokhai to make a save.
Enyimba’s effort did not take time to produce result as Austin Oladapo’s shot at goal was handled in the box and he went ahead to score the resultant spot kick.
17 minutes later, Stanley Dimgba extended the lead with an assist from Cyril Olisema. This boosted the confidence in the team and in some way disorganized the Promise Keepers.
The third goal came in the 33rd minute when Akwa United went in search of a goal and left their back open. Dimgba beat Dennis Nya who was the last man and passed the ball to a better positioned Obi who slotted in the third for the Aba landlords.
However before the end of first half Mfon Udoh in the 39th minute pulled one back when he chipped the ball beyond Afelokhai.
Five minutes into the second half, Obuh switched Michael Ohanu for Christian Ekong to give his team more attacking option, but all effort by the Promise Keepers to rescue the game was voided by the technically organized Enyimba side.
