Eguma satisfied with Rivers United performance in 3-2 loss to Shooting
Technical Adviser of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma commended the effort of his team despite suffering a 3-2 defeat in their penultimate match of a triumphant campaign.
The 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions faced Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) on Sunday without regular stars such as Ishaq Rafiu, Moses Onoja, Morice Chukwu, and Konan Ruffin. This provided rare berth for the Patrick Kingsley, Sikiru Olatunbosun, and Lookman Binuyo amongst others.
“They didn’t disappoint me despite that they had not played regularly in a long time. But it is very important that they are also made to be part of the train so that they can give their own quota to the team,” Eguma told www.npfl.ng
“They tried their best today by scoring two goals. But it was not enough for us to gain the three points at stake. I think they will do better than what they have done today if they are given more chances,” he concluded.
Shooting Stars, who were chasing a win to boost their survival from relegation, raced to a two-goal lead through efforts from Emmanuel Lucky and Opeoluwa Olufemi in the 20th and 25th minutes respectively. Chijioke Akuneto halved the deficit for the Pride of Rivers in the 27th minute.
Moses Omodumueke restored 3SC’s two-goal advantage three minutes before the break. Two minutes into the second half, Akuneto grabbed his second of the game and 18th of the season. However, the Oluyole Warriors held on to a 3-2 win that boosted their chances of avoiding the drop to the Nigeria National League.
