Okon’s header steers Go Round past Sunshine Stars
By Promise Etim
Okon Otop’s 34th minute header was all Go Round FC needed to see off visiting Sunshine Stars 1-0 in a Matchday 12 fixture played at the Krisdera Hotel Stadium, Omoku on Sunday.
The home side before the fixture had won four of their home matches in the campaign, and were hoping to put behind their defeat away to Kano Pillars on Matchday 11, despite not having the privilege to field last season’s top scorer, Ekunta Etenfa, who is yet to regain fitness.
The visitors were without their captain Sunday Abe as well as Super Eagles midfielder at the last CHAN, Dayo Ojo, for the fixture. Sunshine Stars head coach Duke Udi kept faith with the pair of Kehinde Adepipe and Sikiru Alimi upfront.
A lacklustre first half, saw both sides checkmating each other, with few advances. The visitors could have gone ahead in the 20th minute, but for Stanley Nwabali, who did well to produce a good save to stop Anthony Omaka’s 25-yard effort.
Go Round would take the lead on 34 minutes following a quick break, spearheaded by Nelson Esor, who squared into the path of Adeseun Adelani. A cross from the right flank perfectly picked Okon, whose header sent Moses Ocheje the wrong way.
Close to the break, Go Round goalkeeper Nwabali pulled off a stunning save to deny Omotayo Adebogun from drawing Sunshine Stars level.
Morice Chukwu was close to doubling the home side’s advantage on 74 minutes, but his 30-yard pile driver was gathered by Ocheje.
In what was an interesting end to the game, Sunshine Stars were unlucky not to earn a point from the fixture, as second half substitutes Franklin Sasere and Yahuza Bala failed to make glaring opportunities count in the 75th and 91st minute respectively.
