MFM thump struggling Heartland 3-0 at Agege
By Tola Badekale
MFM FC never really got into second gear, but Heartland were very poor and a 3-0 defeat was the least they deserved at the Agege Stadium in one of Sunday’s nine fixtures in the NPFL.
Their rout started as early as the seventh minute when Stanley Okorom scored from a spot kick after a clumsy handball in the area.
The second did not arrive until the 63rd minute but when Chuka Uwaga headed in, there was a sense of feeling in the stadium that it was all over.
But there was still time for a third goal, which came in added time and it was the best of the lot. Tchato Giscard throwing himself at a superb cross just a minute after he had hit the post off a flowing counter by the home side.
Heartland had a lot of the ball but did nothing with it where it mattered most. They could have gone into the break two goals down had Akanni Elijah not missed the easiest chance of the encounter. He shot high while well placed and unmarked.
Yet their day could have been better had Lucky Emariojake been fortunate enough to find target just two minutes after going behind with the first goal.
The best they got subsequently was Abiodun Thomson shooting straight at a well placed Folarin Abayomi in goal for MFM in the 26th minute and Nnamdi Egbujor hit the post in the 67th minute.
At times in their play, the home side showed they had a part of their minds on the important date in Algiers this weekend in the CAF Champions League.
Yet, their below par was still good enough to tear open Heartland so many times. In the second half, Sikiru Olatunbosun alone should have had a hat-trick. He was denied by a last ditch block, the goalkeeper’s save and a shot that went off target by whiskers. All were at the end of flowing counter attacks by MFM.
A much changed side got the job done for MFM head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu without much fuss and he would have seen it as a perfect tonic ahead of the trip to North Africa for the second leg of the CAF Champions League fixture against MC Alger.
