Kester ready to seize opportunity at NPFL Invitational

Akwa United midfielder Kelly Kester is eager to make a mark at his new club, starting with the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Pre-Season Invitational tournament in Kano.

Kester joined United from neighbours Enyimba and the combative midfielder is hoping to make an instant impression with the Promise Keepers as they prepare for what promises to be a busy season ahead.

United are one of six teams scheduled to take part in the NPFL Invitational tournament and Kester is hoping to achieve his goals at an "ambitious club" like Akwa United.

"I start every other season setting targets and goals to achieve during and at the end of the season," began Kester to

"And arriving here, it's clear to me that Akwa United are a very ambitious club, so I believe my set goals can be achieved here."

The Promise Keepers were the toast of many a football fans in the past football season and Kester, having trained with the team for the better part of a month is convinced of the quality they possess.

"Last season they were one of the outstanding teams in the league. With the quality they already have and those they have added to the squad, the team will no doubt be better this coming season."

Kester who was a key component of the Enyimba side in the last two league seasons is one of the prominent league stars who have been signed on by United ahead of what promises to be a hectic schedule in 2018.

Former league topscorer Godwin Obaje, former Golden Eaglets defender Dennis Nya and attacking duo Sunday Faleye and Adesina Gata are some of the other new names on the Akwa-Ibom State sponsored club's payroll.

Seeing the number of new players that have joined the side, Kester emphasizes that the invitational tournament will help his new team gel the new players with the current ones.

"The invitational tournament is very important because it will help, we, the new players, understand how the coach wants us to play and help us show the understanding we are having with the old players.

"The tournament will also help to prepare us for the start of the season and our continental engagements since we are playing against the best teams in the league last season," he added.

Akwa United are drawn in Group B of next week's tournament and will face Champions League representatives MFM FC in their opening match on Monday, December 11.
