Sunshine Stars coach Duke Udi has not minced words in stating that his mission at the Akure club still remains to help them to beat drop from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) at the end of this season.
Udi's men saw their stocks rise in midweek when they stunned one of the big hitters Rivers United at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt through Ezekiel Thompson's well-taken goal.
The Akure Gunners trainer has now promised that his team will continue to fight on till the last day of the season in order to avoid being relegated.
"We will continue to fight to beat the drop until the final whistle this season and God willing we will remain in the top flight next season," Udi told npfl.ng.
Udi could not hide his excitement after his team inflicted a first home defeat on the Port Harcourt club this season.
He described the performance of his players in midweek as champions stuff but is now urging them to focus on their next game - a home contest versus El-Kanemi Warriors.
"It was a very interesting game and my boys played like champions showing that they needed it most.
"But now we must turn our concentration to the next game which is at home. We still remember what happened to us after we won in Ilorin (against ABS), only to return home and lose to Nasarawa (United). We have to just put this win behind and concentrate fully for the next game," Udi said.
Sunshine Stars remaining fixtures of this season are against El-Kanemi (home), Wikki (away), Akwa United (home), Rangers (away), Niger Tornadoes (home), Katsina United (away), FC Ifeanyiubah (home) and Remo Stars (away).
