Founded in 1990, Gombe United are owned and financed by the Gombe State stadium. The club has the longest streak of competing in the top-flight for a northern club, since 1994. Their biggest success to date came in the 2007 season when they finished runners up behind Enyimba in the “Super Four” League Finale played in Lagos. Gombe consequently featured in the 2008 CAF Champions League, but got knocked out in the first round. They also qualified for the West African regional WAFU Cup competition in 2009, but got knocked out in the second round.
