Enyimba put up a commanding performance to thrash FC Ifeanyiubah 4-0 to show their intent of winning a seventh record title in front of their fans in a match day Glo Premier League fixture on Wednesday.
At the zenith of the league with a three-point gap closely followed by Sunshine Stars that were also playing at home against Heartland, the Peoples Elephant needed the win to keep top place on the standing irrespective of the outcome in Akure. That they did convincingly.
The homers started like a house on fire mounting tremendous pressure on the visitors who found it difficult to get the ball out of their own half. With only the 2nd minute in the game, Musa Najare fired a fierce shot over the bar when a bicycle kick by Peter Onyekachi on the left flank fell to Andrew Abalogu in the box who in turn set up Najare to shoot.
Enyimba's dominance in the opening moments paid off in the 19th minute when a long ball into FC Ifeanyiubah’s half afforded Olamilekan Adeleye and Onyekachi the opportunity to chase; Adeleye got to the ball first but under pressure from Onyekachi lost the ball, and the Enyimba winger stole in behind the Ifeanyiubah defender into the box before firing a thunderous shot beyond goalkeeper Chidiebere Eze for the opener.
The hosts did not create enough opportunities as usual at home for all their dominance but kept with the pressure. Moments after making a save from Nzube Anaezemba’s free kick, Eze gifted Enyimba another goal when a routine catch from a corner slipped through his hands and Abalogu was on hand to take advantage to double his team's lead.
The visitors did not trouble goalkeeper Femi Thomas at all in the whole first half but he did make a good interception from a Chibuzor Okonkwo’s set piece in the 35th minute and the Aba club went into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
The second half was no different from the first as Enyimba continued from where they stopped in the first period. The Anambra Warriors did create a chance in the 46th minute when Davidson Jack floated a set piece into Enyimba’s box but nobody was able to connect despite their numbers in Enyimba’s box.
Both sides made changes to their team but it was the tactical impetus of Enyimba’s coach, Kadiri Ikhana that paid off as they completely took control of the game, with their opponents offering no resistance.
Ezekiel Bassey lively all through the game got the third with a brilliant solo effort; receiving the ball on the edge of the opponents' box, he dribbled past three defenders before slotting the ball beyond the reach of Eze to consolidate on his team’s lead.
Four minutes later, Eze fumbled a cracking shot from about 25 yards by Razak Aliyu when instead of punching out the ball, punched into his own net for Enyimba's fourth and the Aba club at this point took a commading 4-0 lead.
Enyimba are now 10 games unbeaten in the league and with the 0-0 result in Akure where Heartland held second-place Sunshine Stars, Ikhana's men have now extended their lead at the top of the pile by five points.
