When Enugu Rangers take on Wikki Tourists in Friday’s first game of Matchday 2 game in the 2016 NPFL Super4, the only thing on the minds of both coaches would no doubt be victory.
Both sides won their Matchday 1 games and will go into Friday’s games knowing that a win could get the trophy outright for them.
Though Rangers coach, Imama Amapakabo has repeatedly said he is not in it to win it, another trophy in their cabinet will certainly be good for morale.
“We have won the NPFL trophy already and the bigger picture for us is certainly the CAF Champions League trophy and not the NPFL Super 4,” Amapakabo said.
“Of course no team goes out to play a game not planning to win but we have not put winning this trophy as our number one priority and that is why we are taking it easy.”
The amiable coach will no doubt be pleased with the display of his team on Wednesday with Chisom Egbuchulam getting a brace, both goals, top quality against Rivers United.
Rangers have no doubt continued from where they left off last season, football that is pleasing to the eyes and winning games for good measure.
Though they fielded most of their team from last season against due to the fact paperwork regarding most of their new players have not been finalized, Imama does not think it will be a problem.
“We will only use what we have and continue to believe and so far it is working for us.
“It’s just a pre-season tournament. We hope that by the time the season kicks off proper, we won’t have these issues of player registration."
But in Baba Ganaru’s Wikki Tourists they will be up against old customers and rivals.
At Kano Pillars, Ganaru fought many battles against Rangers and it continues on Friday, this time in the dugout of Wikki Tourists.
Last season, Rangers were the better side, grabbing 4 points off Wikki, a scoreless draw in Bauchi and a 1-0 win in Enugu.
However, Baba Ganaru knows the Enugu terrain very well having played there on many occasions.
In the league last season while with Pillars, Ganaru won 1-0 in Kano and lost 2-1 in Enugu so he knows games like these do not come easy.
Shammah Tanze, who got the equalizer for Wikki Tourists against FC Ifeanyiubah may be a gem that could blossom into a goal machine only if he gets the right balls through to him.
Omo Johnson, who was at Kano Pillars last term and Bature Yaro are other personnel the Bauchi side have that could take them to glory land.
It seems it is a winner-takes-all situation in Enugu on Friday as both sides know what all three points can do for them.
