Go Round coach Elechi happy to prove critics wrong

Go Round head coach, Ngozi Elechi says he is delighted that his players were able to prove their critics wrong after they pinned Akwa United by a lone goal at the Krisdera Hotel Stadium, Omoku on Wednesday in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 2 tie.

Elechi in a chat with npfl.ng said that many people had written his team off even before the season started and that their first victory of the season against 2017 Aiteo Cup champions has given him the self-belief that Go Round can hold their own in their debut season in the topflight.

He confessed that his players were jittery to face the Promise Keepers at the beginning of the game but that they were irrepressible as soon as they overcame their initial challenge and that they should have beaten their visitors by more than a goal had they converted other chances they had.

“It was a very difficult match and we were aware it would be like that right from when the fixtures were made. They are the defending champions of the Aiteo Cup and everybody was expecting them to win,” Elechi told npfl.ng.

“We had the upperhand in the first half but they stepped up in the second half with the two early substitutions they made but my players held on and should be commended for the win.

“People didn’t give us a chance to stand against them and they have prophesied that we would not do well in the league but I am happy that my players have been able to prove them wrong through their display today (Wednesday).

“Yes, my players gave them too much respect because they were up against a team with so much experienced players. I was under pressure I was expected to win for our people.”

The Go Round coach thumbed up the performance of his boys and has challenged them to surprise Lobi Stars despite their weekend’s impressive away form against Enugu Rangers in midweek in Enugu.
