Alimi aims for double figures & survival with Sunshine Stars

By George Akpayen

Sunshine Stars forward Sikiru Alimi is hoping to achieve two targets by the end of this season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) – scoring double figures and helping his club escape relegation.

Uppermost on the mind of the 22-year-old striker is ensuring that the Akure club beat the drop as they sit in a precarious 18th position with 28 points, one point off safety.

Alimi, who scored an eye-catching goal that has seen him being rewarded with the VAT Wonder Goal, is looking forward to influencing the club’s survival bid with 14 rounds of matches to the end of the campaign while having in mind a previous relegation experience at Warri Wolves in 2016.

“I have experienced relegation before with Warri Wolves,” began Alimi in an interview with npfl.ng.

“We still have a chance to escape this because the other teams above us are not far away. As a team we just need to work hard and hope results go our way. Remember we had three points deducted from us due to crowd issues but we don’t want to dwell on that anymore as we want to do our best.”

However the striker knows that if Sunshine Stars must avoid relegation this term then he needs to get among the goals more often.

Alimi is target double figure of goals having scored seven times so far.

“Of course I want to score 10 goals plus,” he told npfl.ng. “But I also want my goals to save my club from going on relegation which is very important for me, my team-mates, the coaches and our supporters.”

Alimi is currently 12 goals behind the leading scorer Junior Lokosa. He said he would rather keep his ambition modest with reaching double figures and helping Sunshine Stars survive.

“In football anything can happen. Not many would have believed that a player would score 19 goals at this stage of the season. But for me, I just want to score 10 goals or more and help Sunshine Stars escape relegation,” he said.

Alimi and his Sunshine Stars team-mates resume their bid for survival when they play hosts to Abia Warriors at the Akure Stadium on July 18.
