Alade, Nasamu help MFM to first away win
By Promise Etim
Balogun Alade and Emmanuel Nasamu were the heroes as MFM FC earned their first win away from home in the current campaign, courtesy of a lone goal victory over FC Ifeanyiubah, in a Matchday 24 fixture played at the FC Ifeanyiubah Stadium, Nnewi on Sunday.
Alade’s low drive in the 59th minute turned out to be the only goal of the afternoon, but the visitors had goalkeeper Nasamu to thank, for stopping Pascal Seka’s spot kick six minutes after they took the lead, to earn them a moral boosting victory.
Ladan Bosso dropped Adeleye Olamilekan, Bright Onyedikchi and Godwin Obaje to the bench, but handed start to Alaekwe Chijioke, who recently returned to action. The visitors were without Sikiru Olatunbosun for the matchday, but the absence of Fidelis Ilechukwu was overwhelmed by the outcome of the fixture.
Both sides had opportunities of taking the lead before the quarter hour mark, but Ekene Awazie (FCIU) and Akuneto Chijoke (MFM) failed to hit the target on 13 and 14 minutes respectively.
Nasamu forced quick succession of saves off Patrick Ikeokwu in the 17th minute, before Ekene shot straight at him three minutes later, in what could have been the opener. The goalkeeper stunned the home fans a minute later, when he stylishly denied Ikeowku from a one-one situation.
Continued invasion of the visitors’ defence, could not yield any fruit, as FC Ifeanyiubah were wasteful in the closing stages of the first half, despite bringing on Godwin Obaje for an ineffective Alaekwe.
The visitors resumed with renewed hope of a possible upset, and switched to a more offensive mode, with Chukwuka Onuwa firmly in charge at the middle of the pack.
Their efforts paid off just before the hour mark, as Alade was perfectly picked by Onuwa, before outsmarting his marker, to drive low past Bamba Drissa.
It turned sour for the home, as Obaje, who was drafted in to spark things upfront, limped off in the 61st minute.
But the home side were handed a lifeline on 71 minutes, when Nasamu upended Ikeokwu inside the penalty area, leaving the man at the centre with no choice than to point to the spot.
It was nightmare for Pascal Seka, as the Ivorian was left shell-shocked after Nasamu dived in the right direction to keep out his penalty.
Traore Issif and Seka could have brought the home side level on two occasions, before stoppage time, but a resilient MFM stood their ground to earn themselves a famous win.
The win projects MFM to 11th on the log, while FC Ifeanyiubah drop to 15th after two consecutive home defeats.
